NEW SCHOOLS FOR ACTIVE CITIZENSHIP:
TANZANIA, NEPAL, GHANA (ACCRA), £63,000
We believe that the model we have developed at Akokoa, Ghana, is now sufficiently successful and robust to spread the idea to another part of Ghana and to other countries where we have some presence and can proceed less expensively than our initial work at Akokoa.
We have selected Accra, Ghana’s capital city, and Tanzania and Nepal. All three new locations have low levels of active citizenship among school-leavers. Schoolchildren suffer from the same problems of apathy and detachment, which we have learned to tackle. Both can benefit from the kinds of work we have been doing at Akokoa, helping to create, or at least to facilitate, active and effective citizenship.

In Akokoa, we own and run the schools. This has been a great way to see whether our systems work, but it’s expensive! It would be better in Accra and in other countries to work alongside existing schools.
In Accra, and in Nepal and Tanzania, we want to work with a high school already connected with Projects Abroad and accepting Projects Abroad volunteers for teaching, care, medical check-ups, and various other activities. In addition, the school in Tanzania has support for sports development from a private donor.
In Nawalpur, Nepal, and in Accra, Ghana, we will work with high schools, which will mean that school-leavers will be 18, an adaptation of the Akokoa model which we think will make it easier to focus on particular issues of interest to older pupils. We will also use debating as a technique for developing tolerance of other views and for helping students to become more articulate. In Tanzania, we will work with a Maasai school near Arusha, covering the same age-range as in Akokoa, where the community wants to make an impact on policies from public health to sports facilities. In Accra, Ghana, we will work with a successful inner city school.
These partner schools have all been approached by us and wish to develop our model, but they do not have the additional resources to do so themselves.
The costs will be £23,000 Nepal, £17,000 Tanzania, and £23,000 Ghana (Accra)
