More information on SCHOOL GREENING

We have requested, above, £8,100 for our School Greening.  Environmental degradation, like all green issues, is a big problem in Ghana, but it is often ignored in schools.  We want to show the possibilities of making a difference, at least locally.

In the environmental field, we want to create a model of excellence at Akokoa, which can be copied elsewhere as well as making a difference in this particular village and to this particular community.

We have received a private grant of $10,000 to help with this and we have made a start but there is much more to do.

Curriculum

We have written a curriculum on the environment which is designed to be meaningful for a rural community in Ghana, covering, for example, biodiversity loss, deforestation, and pollution. To implement this, an hour a week has been set aside for all classes, 30 minutes in the classroom and 30 minutes in the field

Ecosystem restoration

We have undertaken some ecosystem restoration in a two-hectare area of the village, owned by the Projects Abroad Foundation. This has been quite successful, and a number of school pupils have been involved, but it needs supervision to reduce alien species and to identify what’s going on in terms of new wildlife, which would give this restoration programme more value as an educational tool.

Wildlife

As a result of the work on ecosystem restoration, and village cleaning (especially the removal of plastics), and the provision of a small pond in the restoration area, and a carefully managed organic farming area, we have attracted substantially more birds, amphibians, reptiles and mammals into the area around the village and school, and we try to excite the children about this with posters, local field-trips, and work on the internet.

Recycling

Some recycling is already undertaken, and we are working with local NGOs to reduce and to re-use our waste, especially plastic waste.
